I won Jeapordy!

I wanted to document this magical moment....I got the finally jeapordy question correct when none of the other contestants did! Wahooo. Okay, so maybe it was a guess, but I'll take the credit anyways. The answer was Oedipus, an old Greek story about this guy who fulfills the prophecy to kill his father and marry his mother accedentally.
Okay, enough celebrations, but we'll continue with the useless tibits of information (unless you're on jepordy mind you.) I went to this "ready to learn" program held for parents/caretakers. (It's at Macey's, the last Tues. of the month at 7, for anyone who wants to go!). I also love it becuase I walk away with a free children's book or two. Yesterday I aquired, "I like Me" and "If you take a mouse to the movies". We learned about emergent reading, skills needed before and as true reading begins; perfect for me. The steps were 1) listening; including observation of letters and emotions 2)talking 3)writing; any use of scribbles 4)decoding; such as graphs and symbols 5)comprehension; what did you just read. We discussed brain growth in the first 0-6 years of life and how caretakers largely influence it. I influence their brain wiring for the rest of their life?!
I got thinking about how Eden is learning new words. She takes them at face value. I tell her 'that's a picture of a bird'. Even though the previous picture of a bird looked totally different cartoon and stylized, and she believes me. So every time we pull out the bird book, she'll begin to sign the name for it, I don't think she even understands what a bird is, except for it's a picture in a book. THEN, birds have begun to make their voices heard here and swoop around our courtyard. Now she's bird obsessed! Her new concept of birds have changed. A bird is no longer a picture on a page, that's just the symbol, it's a living animal!
It just got me thinking to what it means to have the faith of a child. To accept 100% what God is telling you, you've never heard of the concept before, but okay! Then, some day, we'll see that concept in action, and it will be so real, we'll be so excitied. Like teaching a child God answers prayers. Having faith in a God, but not so sure what he is, or what prayer is, until one day, a prayer is answered, and it all clicks.

It really is mind-boggling, the influence we have on our little ones. That class sounds so cool. Good for you for going.

That is an amazing reflection, Rebecca! It's also so crazy how quickly children catch on to what we try to teach them (or don't try in some cases).
