Alphabet Days

With my fellow neighborhood mothers we've been meeting together once a week to chat, play, and teach. We've been learning about the letters of the alphabet. I thought I'd post about this because I love it when other people do. After browsing I can be a more creative and fun mother. It helps break up routine for me. So I thought I'd just show you what we've done for each letter so far!

A: Made Ants out of egg cartons and pipe cleaners. The ants went on an adventure trying to find the picnic blanket. But they got lost and yelled "aaaaaaaaah!" Finally they found it and waiting for them were apples and 'ants on a log' treats. Then with their ants the marched to the song "The Ants Go Marching" I think this was Eden's favorite because now whenever she sees an 'A' she YELLS AAAAAAAAAh!

B: We celebrated birthdays by making party hats and blowing up balloons. We ate Bananas and made butterflies. To make the butterfly use a toilet paper rolls or something of the like and glue 2 cut out B's for the wings.

C: we glued cotton balls into the shape of a C. We played 'poor poor pussy cat' and pretended to be cats. We read a book called "Cookies Week" by Cindy Ward while eating cookies. We noticed that if you take a bite out of the cookie it can look like a C. And of course we watched Cookie Monster sing 'C is for cookie' on you tube.

D: I have a djembe drum that the kids loved to bang on. We sang "I'm so glad when Daddy comes home" while hitting the drum and then colored a picture for him. Then we went digging in the sand looking for anything that started with a D. I had previously hid some toys such as dolls, dinosaurs, dolphin....Then we had drinks with the letter D written on the cup.

E: We made elephants out of a paper plate for the head and stapled ears on the sides. Then you cut a hole in the plate for your arm to become the trunk. Then we ate imitation elephant ears; tortilla, butter, and cinnamon sugar. This was my favorite to watch the kids run around pretending to be elephants and trying to make elephant sounds.

F: The theme here was flying. We played football and spun a few other flying toys. We learned about fireflies and read "Sesame Street Pet show" although there would be much better firefly books out there probably. We ate Frosted Flakes. We colored pictures of fireflies, taped them to some string, and ran around with them to make the fly.

G: We made Giraffe puppets with paper bags (which became Eden's new purse). Watched Super Grover on youtube because he has a G on his chest. And pretended to be Gorillas banging our chests yelling "GAAAAAAAAAH".

You are such a good mom! I would know because I watch you be a mom everyday because I'm a creeper...or because I live with you. Take your pick. Every time I hear about these activities it sounds like such fun. Way to be creative!

Zach's had so much fun with these activities. The elephant was carried around for a few days accompanied by the sound :). Thanks for all your hard work on these!

Great ideas, Beck. It's one thing to think or hear about them, but it's a whole different ballgame actually IMPLEMENTING them. Way to go!
