Comfort Foods

Try as I might, I can never seem to replicate the comfort foods my parents made for me as a kid. Specifically, I'll mention my dad's cheese fondue and my mom's cookies. My attempts at the secret fondue recipe have been a tragedy, I've given up. I used to have it every year for my birthday, but I know not to ruin a birthday anymore to try to make it myself. My mom's cookies on the other hand, are salvageable, but can't compare to the puffy, delicious, made with love, warm cookies mom makes. So I've nearly given up on those too. INSTEAD, I've found parmesan cheese fondue and an alternative ch. chip cookie recipe. "Maybe I can pass on my comfort foods to my family in another form." Although, they won't compare to what memories, I can still keep some tradition in my heart. I have to admit, Micah can make these cookies better than I can, I thought that was supposed to be something 'mom' makes for you when you come home from school. I suppose traditions can change ;)
Here's the new cookie recipie, if anyone is interested:
1 C. margarine
3/4 C brown sugar
1/4 C white sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 pkg (3 1/2 oz or 1/2 C) instant vanilla pudding mix
2 eggs
2 1/4 C flour
1 tsp soda
2 C ch. chips
1 C walnuts, chopped-opt-
-mix 1st five ingredients, add eggs. Combine then slowly mix in flour and soda. stir in remaining ingredients. (batter will be stiff). Bake on ungreased sheet at 375 for 9 min. Yield about 4 doz.

p.s. we LOVE this recipie with mint chips. It leaves a refreshing taste in your mouth!

Rebecca, it took 8 years before I found MY chocolate cookie recipe(One that worked for me. I remember Lanita consoling me and eating the the earlier flat overcooked cookies anyway as a gesture of love and support) and I have NEVER tried to make Dad's fondue. I'll have to try your recipe and I'll bet you will cook your recipe better than I will. Funny how that works. You know, no two cooks make a recipe the very same. Better yet, next time I see you, you can make your cookies for ME. Love ya and miss ya!!!

I don't know about you, but I always feel like food cooked by other people is so much better... I think after putting the energy and time into cooking, I'm too tired afterwards to want to eat the food or enjoy it... so maybe that's it... my mom's roast is always better than mine..

I'd have to agree. There's no way to replicate Mom's Yummies, try hard as we may. I also like Nori's point....

Hahaha, your post made Zach and I laugh, because I had a simialar experience. I tried making my dad's regatoni sauce and my mom's maltese cheese cakes. The results just weren't the same--sigh. I even triple checked the recipe to see if I left anything out!! Oh well. Here's to making our own traditional recipes (though I haven't quite found mine yet)!
